Laura Zaffore’s tango journey is one of passion, community, and a deep love for the dance. Originally drawn to tango for its expressive movement and rich Argentinean cultural roots, she quickly discovered that it was much more than just a dance—it was a way of connecting with others and creating meaningful shared experiences.
Tango found me at a time when I needed it most. Unable to travel to mi Buenos Aires querido due to a long and difficult divorce process, I decided that if I couldn’t go to Argentina, Argentina would come to me—through its culture. Having grown up surrounded by the sounds and spirit of tango, I had always felt it deeply, but I never danced it until two years ago when Juan and Tanja invited me to join Kirk’s classes at La Casita.
From the very beginning, I was embraced by the Charleston tango community. Gino, Thad, Quell, Marie France, Nick, Erick, Leila, and many others made me feel instantly welcome. I quickly fell in love not just with the dance but with the people—the beautifully blended, diverse tango community where every story matters.
When the local tango scene faced uncertainty, I, along with César Bustamante and a group of dedicated and passionate tango dancers, stepped in to keep it alive. That’s how Tango sin culpa and the Tango Tuesdays classes were born—projects dedicated to creating a welcoming, inclusive space where tango thrives. With deep gratitude to Sarah, Harby Gonzales, César & Roxana, Gustavo & Florencia, Zenaida & Ken, Constanza Kraftman, the new tangueros, and everyone who has supported this journey along the way, I continue to help nurture and grow our community, honoring the legacy of those who first brought tango to Charleston.
Tango has become both my balance and my adventure—between family, work, and life itself. The hugs, the milonguita smiles, the embrace of the dance floor—all of it makes my life feel like one continuous tango, where every step is an opportunity to connect, express, meet, and belong.
My approach to tango is rooted in musicality, connection, and joy. Whether on the dance floor or organizing events, I strive to make tango accessible to all, creating an environment where dancers feel inspired and at home.
